The department of radiation oncology deals with all the types of cancers. Radiation can be used as a primary modality in certain types of cancers such as cervical and head and neck cancers or it can be used following surgery to prevent local recurrence e.g. Breast cancer. Radiation also plays a role in downsizing the tumour there by facilitating organ and function preservation as in rectal cancer. Finally it is very effective as a palliative modality e.g. in relieving bony metastatic pain.

The department is equipped with the following facilities

  1. The latest model of linear accelerator radiotherapy machine with the capability of delivering following treatment.

    • Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) {Varian-Rapid Arc®}

    • VMAT or Rapid Arc therapy is the latest technology which has revolutionized radiation therapy. The technology improves dose conformity while significantly shortening treatment times. Rapid Arc delivers treatments two to eight times faster than other dynamic treatments available till date and increases precision - a winning combination that enables physicians to improve the standard of care and treat more patients.

    • Image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) using cone beam CT for the precise delivery of radiation by determining the position of the tumour every day.

    • Respiratory gating for motion management of the tumours which move with respiration.

    • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) for the better sparing of normal tissues.

    • Electronic portal imaging to verify the treatment.

  2. High dose rate brachytherapy machine with MRI compatible applicators.

  3. CT scanner (16 slice)/MRI (1.5 Tesla) for imaging and radiotherapy planning.
