For the first time in India, the Oncology department in Vydehi Hospital proudly announces the launch of Laser Guarded Image Guided Radiotherapy along with state of the art Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT).

These technologies provide solutions in real time monitoring of highly conformal treatments with improved patient safety, which in turn will help in better disease control and quality of life.

A four-year-old boy hailing from Assam, suffering from Medulloblastoma, was treated by cranio spinal irradiation (CSI) with IGRT, being the first treatment successfully delivered.

The department provides services to the treatment of Brain, Head and Neck, Thoracic, Abdominal, Genito-Urinary and Extremity tumors.

Rapid arc Upgrade

Introduction of Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT)

Our linear accelerator machine with Image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) facility has been upgraded to deliver volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) {Varian-Rapid Arc®} . The first case was treated in the month of March 2014 after receiving approval from Atomic Energy Regulatory Board-Mumbai. The patient was an elderly male diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumor of the rectum. The lesion was not operable. Hence the decision was taken to treat with definitive radiotherapy with VMAT. In comparison with conventional IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy), VMAT plan gave a precisely sculpted dose to the tumor region. This helped in reducing dose to the normal adjacent structures like bowel and bladder. Another important advantage was that the radiation treatment delivery time could be reduced considerably. Patient completed treatment without any major toxicity.

VMAT or Rapid Arc therapy is the latest technology which has revolutionized radiation therapy. The technology improves dose conformity while significantly shortening treatment times. Rapid Arc delivers treatments two to eight times faster than other dynamic treatments available till date and increases precision - a winning combination that enables physicians to improve the standard of care and treat more patients.
