The department of Respiratory Medicine was started at Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre under the guidance of Dr. Alamelu Haran. Since then the department has made steady progress. Earlier it used to cater to the under-graduate students only, in the year 2012 the department got permission for Post-graduate M.D. Degree course with two MD registrations per year.

The department has attained great heights and now offers state of the art care. The department attracts patients with complex problems from different parts of the country. The department is adequately staffed and has been catering to the needs of the undergraduate and Post-graduate students. Patient care has been maintained well with the exclusive respiratory wards and with good special ward occupancy. Laboratory support services include a pulmonary function lab with diffusion studies, exercise physiology and sleep lab. The department offers diagnostic video-bronchoscopy services. A portable video bronchoscope is available for bedside services as in ICU or during an emergency. The department has the backing of a good thoracic surgery service from the department of cardiothoracic-vascular surgery. The respiratory research wing of the department is involved in “original research” in asthma, COPD, tuberculosis, lung cancer and other respiratory diseases. Pulmonary rehabilitation has been initiated in co-ordination with the department of Psychiatry.

The department has been actively involved in the implementation of RNTCP which is a WHO sponsored programme and the department has been recognized as a Nodal Centre for RNTCP Programme.

Dr Alamelu Haran and Dr Ravi Kumar are recognized as PG Guides in Respiratory Medicine by RGUHS.
