Overview

The Department of Pathology, Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre provides both, laboratory services to in patients and out- patients and academic activities in the form of teaching of undergraduate students of medical, dental and paramedical courses and also postgraduate students in the field of pathology.

Regular internal quality checks through intradepartmental reviews of previously reported cases ensure maintenance of high standards in reporting. Difficult lesion are reported only after interdepartmental consultation among the various staff and the arrival of a consensus opinion. Laboratory Services
1. Histopathology: Routine reporting of specimens received from Operation Theater and from the out –patient departments. Regular Hematoxyline and Eosin (H& E) stains and also ‘Special” histochemistry stains like Ziehlneelsen, Wade – Fite, Congo Red and periodic acid Schiff (PAS) are employed. All reports are provided using the latest terminology and diagnostic criteria – oncology reports include staging using the AJCC staging system; relevant grading systems and prognostic indicators are used; for instance Gleason scoring for prostate cancer, modified Bloom-Richardson grade and Nottingham Prognostic Index (NPI) for breast cancer etc.

2. The cytology reporting includes body fluid eytology, cervical smear cytology using Papanicolaou (PAP) stain and Fine Needle Aspiration cytology (FNAC) using H & E and May – Grunwald – Giemsa (MGG) stain. Histochemical stains are also employed as and when required. Pap smears are reported according to the 2001 Bethesda system. The pathologists in the department perform fine needle aspiration both as routine procedures and also under sonologic guidance.

3. In the field of hematology, peripheral smears and bone marrow aspiration smears on Leishman stained slides are reported.

4. The blood bank officer at the Blood Bank provides and monitors provision whole blood and procurement of blood components for transfusion.

Teaching
1. Undergraduate teaching for MBBS and BDS through theory lectures, tutorial classes and practical classes. Regular theory and practical classes. Regular theory and practical internal assessments are conducted and student performance monitored. The department maintains and regularly upgrades teaching material for these students – these are in the form of wall mounted charts and handouts.

2. The departmental museum houses in excess of 300 specimens along with corresponding catalogs for student perusal. The specimens are constantly upgraded with assistance from the museum curator.

3. Regular postgraduate training sessions are held on a regular basis. Weekly sessions include subject seminars, journal clubs and slide reviews.
