Fda Approves Drug That Keeps Prostate Cancer At Bay For Long Time

Prostate cancer is one of the cancers that is common across the world. As per the statistics, it is known to be the second most common cancer in US and UK and sixth common cause of cancer deaths in the world. As far as India is concerned, the rates earlier were quite lower compared to other countries. But, the recent data shows a rise in cancer in India and mostly in urban areas particularly since the time.

prostate cancer

Now, males hormones are such that they only aid in worsening the symptoms and aiding its spread. Nubeqa or darolutamide is the new drug that is effective in controlling the cancer spread. It has the ability to increase the life expectancy rates by more than double.

As per the trial investigator and medical direction Neal Shore of Carolina Urologic Research Centre Prostate cancer particularly that’s spread across the other body parts is highly sensitive to the spread fast under the influence of male hormones like testosterone and testosterone metabolites.

Shore added the initial trials of the drug were a success as the tolerance was quite good events unique to ARIs that were observed in the earlier trials are not observed with darolutamide. Only that certain side effects like Nubeqa, rash and fatigue

He also added that the FDA approved the med only after it cleared the Phase III ARAMIS trial with positive results showing a rise in metastasis-free survival (MFS). Published in the New England Journal of Medicine earlier this year, had carried out the trial that involved 1509 participants who were provided with 600 mg of oral drug two times a day or a placebo alongside ADT. The randomized trial was multi-center, double blinded and placebo controlled on men with nmCRPC and under the treatment of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) with higher chances of turning out to be metastatic.

Robert LaCAze, executive member of pharmaceuticals division as well as strategic business head at Bayer stated that Nubeqa approval had opened gates to a new therapy that aids in extending MFS besides allowing physicians more flexibility in treating men having nmCRPC.

As per Matthew Smith, MD, PhD, director at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Centre in Boston for Genitourinary malignancies program, The approval of Nubeqa has opened the gates for a new option in prostate cancer treatment. He added that the objective of the treatment was to curb the spread of the cancer besides controlling therapy side effects as Patients usually do not exhibit any typical symptoms of MFS.

Many a times we do care for our health and fitness but our concentration is towards nutrition and exercise mostly. What we often tend to ignore is sleep. Today lifestyle is sedentary but very hectic and stressful and sleep often takes the back seat. Furthermore, if you have addictions then sleep deprivation is going to haunt you more. If you’re alcohol consumption is high or even if you drink a lot of coffee, you are sure to experience sleep difficulty particularly if you consume it before bedtime. Here’s some of the side effects of sleep deprivation you need to know to keep it up your health management list alongside food, nutrition and fitness schedule.

5 Side Effect Sleep Deprivation

Immunity Issues – Sleeping helps strengthen the immune system by producing more antibodies for battling the bacteria and toxin. If you don’t sleep well then it automatically affects the immune system as the production goes down, making your body vulnerable to umpteen conditions and infections. The most common being cold and flu, but could lead to lung problems as well.

Weight Gain – The hormone leptin is responsible for sending the brain signal about hunger satiation. Less sleep reduces the level for this hormone while increasing the level of ghrelin hormone that increases appetite. Thus, leading to obesity.

Anemia – An Emergency Like Situation In India That Needs Immediate Attention

If we go by latest statistics around anemia, then the news is surely bad because it says that almost 40% of the population in India Is Anemia. Anemia, as we all know is caused due lack of hemoglobin, a substance carries oxygen to the RBCs. Iron rich dark green leafy vegetables are the source of the essential nutrients required to fight anemia.

Even worse, the global nutrition report of 2017 shows India in the last spot which is worrisome for sure. Also another report of 2016, shows over 45% of female population in India is anemic and over 20% women are overweight.

Anemia - India

Though, the government has been able to curb population of people living below extreme poverty lines from a humungous 306 million to 48 million. But, as far as curbing malnutrition is concerned, the government hasn’t been as much successful, despite efforts.

Even today Anemia is known to affect every second child in the country. There is not much decline in the condition over the past two decades. Even among the age group of 15 – 49 year olds, there isn’t any significant decline. This is an emergency situation as it seems and needs immediate attention.

The factors that are the real obstacles in the fight against anemia besides poverty are poor sanitation, gender bias, iron deficient diet and the government has been working on resolving these problems consistently.

One of the projects of the government which gave great results was that of Iron Supplementation program which increased the consumption of folic acid tablets by 30%. Thus simple strategies like Food Fortification, could be the possible answer to this problem which is taking a toll on the health of Indians for a long time now. Rice which seems to be the staple of over half of the population in India can supplied through a network of shops that offer it at an affordable price.

Gut Bacteria as an Anti – Aging Agent – An Overview

Gut Bacteria as an Anti - Aging Agent

Gut bacteria in the years to come can help reduce the effects of aging, rather could be of great help in slowing down aging process. This could be possible with the help of supplements derived from gut bacteria. These bacterial genes and compounds can also decrease the rate of tumor progression inside our body besides amyloid beta accumulation, a compound known to be related to Alzheimer’s disease, as per University of Texas Health Science Center.

The scientists and researchers fraternity is well aware that the body interacts with millions of microbes called the microbiomes, inside the body. These microbiomes tend to influence the metabolic and cognitive activities as well as the aging process. Scientists at the Huffington Center are investigating on the possibility of importance of genetic composition of microbiomes for long life.

Experimentation
An experiment was carried out on laboratory work C. elegans as doing it on mammals was quite challenging technically. The characteristics of C. Elegans are very much similar to that of human biology and are simple, transparent organisms with a short life span of upto 3 weeks. This aids in rapid collection of data.

The experiment involved deleting one gene each from the 4000 genes at a time in an e.coli bacteria library to study the effects of each one. The researchers fed each individual mutant bacteria to the C. Elegans and then observed the worm’s life span closely.

As per the researchers, out of 4000 bacterial genes that they tested, they deleted 29 of them and found that it increased the life span of the worms. Furthermore, they also noticed that, 12 of these bacteria restricted tumor growth besides amyloid-beta accumulation. Even purified colanic acid was provided to C. Elegans and showed increased life span in them besides fruit fly and other mammalian cells. They also found that colanic acid regulated the dynamics of cellular structures called mitochondria, responsible for providing energy to the cell.

Well, based on the research that has been carried out and is being carried out, the researchers affirmatively suggest that designing supplements of the bacteria or their compounds could help slow down the aging process.

Autism in Women – The Difference

Autism in Women

Though Autism effects men and women both, international studies show that the number of women diagnosed with Autism is as many as 5 times less than that of men. Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a disorder that hampers social behavior. People with ASD find significant difficulty in communication and interaction socially. Their interests are also limited in nature with keen interest in some particular subject/ subjects. They also display repetitive behavior and unusual responses to anger, affection or distress. These are simply a few of the symptoms that people with Autism show. On the flip-side, these people are more intelligent on an average and have the abilities to excel in subjects like mathematics, science, art or music.

Now there are questions raised on the fact whether Autism has anything to do with gender and the research in the direction is already on. Many theories have been presented in the matter which harp upon the fact that were ignored. Here is a run down some reasons for less diagnosis of Autism in Women –

MALE ORIENTED RESEARCH – Based on the fact that case of Autism have been high in boys, the study or research on it mainly revolved round male characteristics. There is almost no data on autism research dedicated to female gender.

OVERSIGHT OR NEGLIGENCE – Usually, males are the ones who receive more attention in childhood as compared to females, because of their disruptive nature. This on the other hand might cause oversight or negligence to the girl child with Autism symptoms.

LESS SEVERE SYMPTOMS COMPARED TO MALES – there are studies about girls having less severe symptoms compared to boys, because in general that are known to be introvert as compared to the boys and its socially acceptable as well.

SOCIAL INTERESTS IN GIRLS ARE AS USUAL – When compared with boys who develop keen or critical interests in unusual subjects like train time table for example while in girls is more or less about dolls, celebrities and more. So, girls with autistic symptoms cannot be easily pointed out.

FEMALES TEND TO MASK THE SYMPTOMS – The girls are usually more adjusting in nature and autistic girls might even repress their behavior even more, which would avoid making them the center of attraction.

Gender autism studies taken up in the recent past suggest that women exhibit different symptoms than males with autism.

Here is a run down these symptoms

  • Shy or Passive Behavior
  • Prefer Direct Interaction with others
  • Better imagination and linguistic ability
  • Interests around people and animals
  • More social imitation skills
  • Experience high anxiety and depression levels
  • Experience heavy stress in teenage and make few friends

Many of the symptoms are not really helpful and hence it results in under diagnosis in Women, Particularly. There have also been instances where women have been diagnosed with Autism post their 40’s due to the aforementioned factors. But, the coming times seem to shed more light on the topic so that the diagnosis could be done as early as possible so as the treatment.
