She is a renowned Pediatric Physical Therapist from Los Angeles, California, USA.

She would be consulting our special kids & will give her valuable suggestions relating to thin need of tapping on orthotic supports.

She also would be delivering lectures on “Bio Mechanics” during her visits.

Growing up as a transsexual is painful because of the social, physical and emotional consequences that the individual faces along with his whole family. Unfortunately it is a condition that is rarely diagnosed correctly or early enough by doctors. However, a life long tragedy was altered for the Kumar family of Kolar District on 7th July 2010, thanks to Dr. Dinakara of Vydehi Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre.

A baby boy of two days only, born to Naveen and Sudha Kumar, suffered from strange, mysterious symptoms like frantic fits, low sodium and glucose levels, abrupt breathing etc. “At birth the baby did not cry, on closer examination, he started crying but it was not until the second day that my wife felt there was a deeper problem” Naveen Kumar recalls. Unable to decode these symptoms, doctors in their first hospital, Malur, referred them to a bigger hospital.

After hospital hopping, the parents in despair finally landed in Vydehi Hospital. The doctors here diagnosed him with a rare cogenital problem called adrenal hemorrhage, saving him from living his adult life as a transsexual. Difficult to diagnose, its occurrence is only 0.001 cases in a thousand, with a mortality rate of 75-80%.

Dr. Dinakara Prithviraj, consultant neonatologist at the Vydehi Hospital, said that, “Even if such babies survive, they will suffer repeated episodes of fever, vomiting and diarrhea. Males might develop female characteristics, as the affected gland does not produce testosterone hormone essential to develop the male characteristics.”

The symptoms of low sodium and glucose levels, breathing problems and paleness, often mislead doctors to think that the problem is in the brain, eventhough, the problem occurs in the stomach, wherein the blood collects in the abdomen. “He was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at birth due to breathing abnormalities, this ruptured this adrenal gland which aggravated his problem.” explains Dr. Dinakara.

Fortunately for the family, this mistake was detected on time at Vydehi Hospital. Doctors remark that although the initial tests were related to the brain, it did not stop them from further examination which showed some mass in the abdomen area.

Thus, not only was a life saved but the future of the whole family was lifted from what could have been very dark and painful. Naveen and Sudha Kumar’s baby boy went through a rigorous treatment at the Vydehi Hospital for 12 days. The hassles were worth it because the parents are happy to see a bright future ahead for their son.

He has received the Best Paper award for Allied Neuroscience from Neurological Society of India for his study on localization and arrangement of the sympathetic neurons in a thoracic segment of monkeys (macaca radiate) spinal cord using horse radish peroxidase enzyme. He has rich surgical experience in Cranial Surgeries, Spine Surgeries, Trauma, Stereotaxy, Radiosurgery, Radio Frequency lesion and functional Neurosurgery.

Doctor is responsible in setting various well equipped Neuro Trauma Centre in Bangalore. He has represented the institute in numerous National & International Neurosurgery conferences. His main interests are Neuro Critical Care, Spine Care and minimally invasive Neuro Surgery.

He is founder member of Indian Trauma Surgeons Society and presently the join secretary of the society.

Vydehi Medical College hospital set up a Gas Plasma Sterilizer costing Rs.50 Lakhs. Mrs. D.A. Kalpaja, Director, VIMS & RC had inaugurated the machine on 20-01-10 at VIMS & RC. According to director, this is the first medical college hospital in Karnataka to adopt the next generation Plasma Sterilizer ‘STERRAD’ from Johnson and Johnson.

Wonder what a Rehab Day celebration is!!! It is a Day to students at our rehabilitation centre really rocks, that was the day in their life which brings enthusiasm and skills.

Students from the Vydehi Institute of rehabilitation came in the midst of the college ground to celebrate. There were participations from every department– School for special needs, speech, Visual Stimulation, psychotherapy and so on. I saw their bright faces filled with passion along with their loved ones.

Function started with prayer chanted by students followed by play games which allow them to practice learned skills. It was amazing to see these kids playing lemon & spoon, find and pick the toys from sand, mix and match vegetables and other athletic activities. Well, I believe these activities will bring enjoyment and improve learning abilities in them.  The teachers and parents were the organizers and also participated in various other events.

After lunch, the center of attraction was at college auditorium. The kids were performing yoga, absolutely clinical.

End of the day, every participant got their prizes for their utmost participation in the event. It’s really a sigh of relief for the participants and their beloved ones. Hope these kids will get more and more opportunities to enhance their confidence and skills…

Mr. S. Sowmya Narayanan, Chief Medical Physicist in the department of radiation physics @ Vydehi Institute of Oncology.

He has fourteen years of experience in the field of Radiological Physics and served in various reputed institutes in India. He has completed his radiological physics specialization from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai after his M.Sc (Physics) and he is life member of Association of Medical Physicists of India. He attained one’s significant achievements in life to associate with various conferences, preparing course curriculum for universities & several scientific paper in the field of oncology.

European Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ESTRO), Founded in 1980 to enhance the development in the field of oncology through education, professional development, promotion of research and dissemination of outcomes, courses and conferences. Mr.S. Sowmya Narayanan participated 10th Biennial ESTRO Conference on Physics and Radiation Technology for Clinical Radiotherapy that held from August 30 to September 3, 2009, in Maastricht, the Netherlands. He is the only invitee from India delivered a lecture on IGRT in Varian’s European Users’ Meeting for the following topic “Quality Assurance for Gated Radiotherapy”

Under his guidance, the department of oncology @  VIMS & RC  has presented three scientific papers in the 30th Annual Conference of Association of Medical Physicists of India(AMPICON 2009) held at Hyderabad. This is the maximum contribution from any single institution.
