Anemia – An Emergency Like Situation In India That Needs Immediate Attention

If we go by latest statistics around anemia, then the news is surely bad because it says that almost 40% of the population in India Is Anemia. Anemia, as we all know is caused due lack of hemoglobin, a substance carries oxygen to the RBCs. Iron rich dark green leafy vegetables are the source of the essential nutrients required to fight anemia.

Even worse, the global nutrition report of 2017 shows India in the last spot which is worrisome for sure. Also another report of 2016, shows over 45% of female population in India is anemic and over 20% women are overweight.

Anemia - India

Though, the government has been able to curb population of people living below extreme poverty lines from a humungous 306 million to 48 million. But, as far as curbing malnutrition is concerned, the government hasn’t been as much successful, despite efforts.

Even today Anemia is known to affect every second child in the country. There is not much decline in the condition over the past two decades. Even among the age group of 15 – 49 year olds, there isn’t any significant decline. This is an emergency situation as it seems and needs immediate attention.

The factors that are the real obstacles in the fight against anemia besides poverty are poor sanitation, gender bias, iron deficient diet and the government has been working on resolving these problems consistently.

One of the projects of the government which gave great results was that of Iron Supplementation program which increased the consumption of folic acid tablets by 30%. Thus simple strategies like Food Fortification, could be the possible answer to this problem which is taking a toll on the health of Indians for a long time now. Rice which seems to be the staple of over half of the population in India can supplied through a network of shops that offer it at an affordable price.

Risk of Breast Cancer in Trans Women Post Hormone Therapy Escalates To Over 45 Times

A Study has found that trans-women undergoing the gender change procedures increase their risk of getting breast cancer by over 46% as compared to men. The study was carried out on over 2000 trans-women and it was found that after undergoing the sex change procedures 1 in 200 came under the risk scanner of breast cancer as compared to less than 8000 in men.

The studies that were carried out earlier have shown that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) does increase the risk of breast cancer particularly in women post menopause. Suggestively, it would increase the risk in trans-women undergoing hormone treatment.

As study involving 2260 women, 15 cases of invasive breast cancer came to light of that of women of over 50 years of age post 18 years on an average of hormone therapy. Dr. Martin Den Heijer from Amsterdam University Medical Centre says that the issues and side effects of hormone therapy are knowns are discussed also with the people who undergo treatment.

Though the risk for naturally born women is one third less, the experts from Netherlands said that not only the patients but even the doctors needed to be aware of the fact that injections of female hormones do have an increased threat.

In Britain there has been a drastic rise in the number of operations and it’s around 250 per year presently as compared to 54 around 2000. The researchers were unclear though if some of the cases were genetic or due do lifestyle because one of their trans gender woman study did carry the BRCA gene mutation that lead to breast cancer. Besides, it also showed that trans- gender men were at a considerably lower risk as compared to female population. The study that determined the same involved 1229 trans men of which four had invasive breast cancer have diagnosed at 47 years post 15 years of hormone treatment.

Breathing Effects On Emotions and Judgement

We all know how oxygen is our basic breathing requirement to live, without which life on earth would not be possible. But, now there is more that researchers have discovered about breathing. As per their findings, the breathing pattern or rhythm is responsible fore creating electrical activity in the part of human brain that in turn helps in enhancement of memory recall and emotional judgments.

Breathing Effects On Emotions and Judgement

Further the neurologists also found that there was significant difference in brain activity in the hippocampus and amygdala area during inhalation rather than exhalation. While breathing in the neurons in the olfactory cortext, hippocamus, amygdala and across the limbic system are stimulated.
They apparently discovered the same when some of them were working on seven patients suffering from epilepsy. They were trying to find out the origin of seizures and installed electrodes in the brains of patients a week before surgery thus collecting the electro-physiological data directly from the brains. This is when they found out that while breathing the brain activity fluctuated. Brain activity occurs in areas memory, smells and emotions are processed.

Now, this led to another question on brain activity and it was where cognitive functions were typically associated and affected by breathing particularly memory and fear processing. As per findings the amygdala was linked fear related emotions of emotional processing strongly. To study the same 60 subjects were assigned the activity of making rapid decisions on emotional expressions while breathing in the laboratory itself. They were also shown different types of pictures with facial expressions of surprise or fear and the subjects had to recognize these expressions fast. The results varied in subjects when inhaling, exhaling and inhaling through mouth.

The results indicated that while inhaling the patients were able to recognize the expressions faster and better, of that of fear than exhaling. But, it did not hold true for surprise.

Zika Virus and Brain Cancer

One of the most dreaded diseases in India is Cancer and its various varieties. As on day there are a variety of treatments available to treat cancer through surgeries and therapies. But, we are yet to find a treatment that guarantees uprooting cancer from its root and even vaccines to avoid it altogether. Here’s some update on zika virus and its association with brain cancer.

Zika Virus and Brain Cancer

Most of us are aware of the havoc that Zika virus has been creating since its outbreak in the south african countries. But, we are less known of some new updates on the same. Researchers apparently have found out its usage in brain cancer treatment beyond its significant threat to the unborn children.

Though untested in humans yet, the results after testing on lab dishes and animals do reveal that could help treat brain cancer. Its already known that in infants and fetus, the zika targets the brain stem cells which are found in abundance in their brain cells and kills them. This usually increases the chances of neurological issues in new borns infected with zika. But, zika is not able to target adult brains with the same effectiveness. Comparatively, the effect is less severe plus these viruses have the ability to target and kill the lethal glioblastomas, stem cells which are lethal and are not affected by chemotherapy or radiation therapy and trigger the cancer again post treatment.

This research had further created rays of hope in treating brain cancer but requires further studies and tests to be carried out on animals before trying out on humankind. The reason mainly revolves around safety issues related to zika virus. Presently, there are research groups that are also testing other virus like polio, herpes and more in order to target glioblastomas. The use of zika virus as a brain cancer healer aide might require quite some time and a lot of further testing before it hits the cancer hospitals across the world.

Gut Bacteria as an Anti – Aging Agent – An Overview

Gut Bacteria as an Anti - Aging Agent

Gut bacteria in the years to come can help reduce the effects of aging, rather could be of great help in slowing down aging process. This could be possible with the help of supplements derived from gut bacteria. These bacterial genes and compounds can also decrease the rate of tumor progression inside our body besides amyloid beta accumulation, a compound known to be related to Alzheimer’s disease, as per University of Texas Health Science Center.

The scientists and researchers fraternity is well aware that the body interacts with millions of microbes called the microbiomes, inside the body. These microbiomes tend to influence the metabolic and cognitive activities as well as the aging process. Scientists at the Huffington Center are investigating on the possibility of importance of genetic composition of microbiomes for long life.

Experimentation
An experiment was carried out on laboratory work C. elegans as doing it on mammals was quite challenging technically. The characteristics of C. Elegans are very much similar to that of human biology and are simple, transparent organisms with a short life span of upto 3 weeks. This aids in rapid collection of data.

The experiment involved deleting one gene each from the 4000 genes at a time in an e.coli bacteria library to study the effects of each one. The researchers fed each individual mutant bacteria to the C. Elegans and then observed the worm’s life span closely.

As per the researchers, out of 4000 bacterial genes that they tested, they deleted 29 of them and found that it increased the life span of the worms. Furthermore, they also noticed that, 12 of these bacteria restricted tumor growth besides amyloid-beta accumulation. Even purified colanic acid was provided to C. Elegans and showed increased life span in them besides fruit fly and other mammalian cells. They also found that colanic acid regulated the dynamics of cellular structures called mitochondria, responsible for providing energy to the cell.

Well, based on the research that has been carried out and is being carried out, the researchers affirmatively suggest that designing supplements of the bacteria or their compounds could help slow down the aging process.
