The More Happy You Be The More You Live – Read On For The Proof

A recent study has revealed that people who are highly optimistic tend to live long life of over 85 years and more. The PNAS paper has the details which includes how the researchers tried to find out the relation between higher positivity and longer life while focusing more on exceptional longevity.

Usually all the research around longevity is focused around the role of biomedical factors and hence the study was more about the psychological factors that help with longevity. As per Lewina O Lee, PhD, and associate professor of psychiatry at the school of medicine of Boston University and the corresponding author brought up that there was very less study around the psychosocial effects role in promoting healthy aging.

The More Happy You Be The More You Live

According to her and team, optimism was “general expectation that good things will happen or the belief that the future will be favorable because one can control important outcomes.”

The data used for the research included 69744 females from Nurses Health Study (NHS) and 1429 males from Veterans Affairs Normative Aging Study (NAS) across the 30 years (1986-2016). The routine also included regular health survey about diet, smoking, alcohol and other health related behaviors and questions on optimism. While 71% of the males who participated died within the 30 years of their follow up, 13% percent of the female participants passed away within 10 years of follow up.

Here’s an example of one of the six questions that the NHS participants were asked –

Rate the statement on whether you agree or disagree “Overall, I expect more good things to happen to me than bad” on a five point scale.

The researchers then carried out an analysis of the data and discovered that the most optimistic males as well as females at the start of follow up lived 11-15% longer as compared to those who were least optimistic. The team also found that even after conforming to the health behavior results like educational achievement, depression, diet, doctor visits, smoking and alcohol, the associations still held true.

Nicotene Cigarettes And Its Affects On Blood Vessels

E-cigarettes are a common with people who are working towards quitting smoking. The latest report from the Centre of Disease Control and prevention (CDC), over 10% of US smokers have tried using e-cigarettes atleast once and around 4% already use it on a daily basis. The promoters of e-cigarettes claim it to be a healthy alternative to the more harmful tobacco cigarettes.

Though the long term effect of e-cigarettes can only be determined after research. There have been many studies already questioning the safety around using e-cigarettes and the effects of vaping nicotine free e-cigarettes.

A new research that investigates into this topic has been published in the Radiology Journal. The study was carried out at the Structural, Physiologic as well as Functional Laboratory imaging University of Pennsylvania of Philadelphia by a post-doctoral researcher called Alessandra Caporale.

Nicotene Cigarettes And Its Affects On Blood Vessels

THE STUDY

The study involved around 31 healthy non-smoking adults in the age group of 24 years. An MRI was undertaken before and after them using nicotine free e-cigarettes. The participants had to take 16 puffs in total with each lasting for 3 seconds.

The e-cigarette content was free from nicotine but included glycerol and propylene glycol with a tobacco flavor. The researchers measured ‘reactive hyperemia’ or a short rise in the arterial blood flow post occlusion, of their subjects after they constricted and released their blood vessels.

The MRI scans did show that there was a reduction in the femoral artery’s blood flow. Femoral is the main artery responsible for delivering blood to the thigh and leg area of the body. Another note that the team made was about reduction in reactive hyperemia as well.

Based on the study, the researchers concluded that smoking nicotine free e-cigarette aerosol does affect the endothelial function in healthy smokers transiently. Endothelial is the thin cell layer that lines the inner side of blood vessels. If the endothelium is damaged, it will lead to thickening of the arteries and thus poor blood circulation. This could further lead to life threatening conditions like stroke or heart attack.

FINDINGS

The final results showed that there was a decrease in dilation in the femoral artery by 34%. Post vaping while the venous oxygen levels dropped by 20%, the blood flow by 17.5% and the reactive hyperemia by almost 26%. The results as per the main investigator and professor of radiologic science as well as biophysics Dr Felix W Wehrli mean that the liquid of the e-cigarettes was to some extent harmless but the process of vaporization had the ability to transform the primary molecules namely glycerol and propylene glycol into toxic substances. The Vaping also has an instant and sudden effect on the vascular function of the body and could have harmful effects on a long run.

So, if you use e-cigarettes, be warned that they aren’t really a safe alternative as per the results of the study and that if you are planning to start, do not.

Mobile Technology And Healthcare – The Union

Technology could be a boon or a bane, but depends. With healthcare its boon in a way that it has been able to speed up all the time taken around documentation of patients and the daily routines around patient care. On the flip side mobile technology could be a pain in the neck with updates popping up on your device every now and then. As per a medical expert Dr Bryan Vartabedian, director of community medicine for Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition division of a children’s hospital in Houstan, technology does play a critical role in healthcare. An avid healthcare blogger and his observations around technology and healthcare, he talks about a survey around the mandatory introduction to technology in USA since 2014. The survey states that in one of the most developed countries of the world USA, only about 59 percent of the doctors make use of EMR( electronic medical records) while for 20 percent, it’s a challenge. But, the people who have been using it do know that it is of vital importance and has made their life quite easier than before. One of the major benefits include instant access to patient records in the examination room using internet and entering patient information. Another common use as per survey states that over 85 percent doctors use it for seeking information on drugs and over 75 percent for diagnosis as well as treatment of specific conditions.

Mobile Technology And Healthcare

On the flip side there have been complaints of patients that they see the doctor staring at the screen and not examining them most of the time. Now, the solution apparently lies in using technology mindfully. It’s better to do one task at a time rather than multitasking as per him. A good idea is to tell the patient to wait until the patient information/ history is retrieved on the computer EMR and then just concentrate on attending the patient.

Mobile technology is certainly a boon for many like Dr Vartabedian but like every coin has a flip side to it, even technology does. But, the technology is here to stay and certainly the pros outnumber the cons.

Fatty Liver Disease – An Insight

For those who haven’t heard of fatty liver, it means that liver has extra fat in it. The scientific name for the same is hepatic steatosis and is a resulting of addiction to alcohol. Due to high consumption of alcohol fat builds up inside the liver making it hard to work properly. It does not mean that if you do drink, you don’t get fatty liver. For those who don’t consume alcohol and still have fatty liver condition, it is a result of mainly a metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, high amount of belly fat and is known as Nonalcoholic Fatty liver Disease (NAFLD).

NAFLD

Simple Fatty Liver – This means there is only extra fat and no inflammation on the liver cells. Most people suffer from Simple fatty liver and it does not get worse.

Non Alcoholic Steathohepatitis (NASH) – This is known to be serious as compared to simple fatty liver. It occurs when the liver gets inflamed. Your liver cells get damaged due to NASH and can lead to further life threatening conditions like cirrhosis, liver cancer and fibrosis.

Alcohol related fatty liver disease – Also known as ALD, it might or might not exhibit any symptoms. If there are symptoms, they include discomfort or pain in the upper right side of belly. Though if drinking is not stopped, it can lead to complication like alcoholic cirrhosis and hepatitis.

Alcoholic Cirrhosis – The condition causes scar tissue buildup in liver. Symptoms that surface include fluid buildup in the belly, body bleeding, enlarged spleen, liver failure, dis-orientation and behavior changes as well.

Alcoholic Hepatitis – This kind of lever swelling can cause belly pain, jaundice, nausea and vomiting. Alcoholic fatty lever worsens to lead to alcoholic hepatitis and further more into Cirrhosis.

Symptoms – NAFLD as well as ALD as mentioned before may or may not give any symptoms other that fatigue or pain in the upper right side of the belly.
Though NASH as well as cirrhosis do exhibit symptoms like red palms, breast enlargement in men, swollen belly, enlarged blood vessels below skin.

Diagnosis – The diagnosis is based on physical exam, health history and based on tests like blood tests as well as imaging tests. If required a liver biopsy may also be advised.

Treatment – There is no treatment as such in terms of medications for NAFLD, but in case of NASH complications like liver failure or cirrhosis, you may have to go for a liver transplant.

The Weight Loss Plan That Has Taken Maharashtra by Storm

The Diet plan of Dr. Dixit, a professor at the preventive departments of social medicine at the Government medical college and hospital believes that accepting that you are overweight and that you need a diet correction which includes shunning away tempting food and controlling diet in order to keep your diabetes at bay.

Diabetes is very common in India today and more like an epidemic, hence people do need to take their diet seriously. Dr. Dixit has devised a diet plan for 18 years and above age group. His diet plan is quite unique in a way. He harps upon a meal that is high in proteins and low in carbohydrates.

As per Dr Dixit, the food that is high on carbohydrate is responsible for secretion of insulin in big quantities. The meal that is rich in protein will cause less secretion of insulin. Hence, eating anything in between two meals is not advisable. Better drink water, green tea, coconut water or buttermilk instead as they do not trigger the secretion of insulin.

Weight Loss

This theory of carboinsulin connection has been discussed by late Dr Shrikant Jichkar, who presented this idea of eating only two meals a day for diabetes prevention. He also organized a study of 446 participants out of which 428 did complete the study with the 6 monthly follow up. There was an average loss of 6.8 kg during the six months. The logic was that there was a rise in diabetes if the insulin levels increased.

He also added that the diet plan he has designed does not lead to loss of stamina. Instead poor diet can lead to health hazards like diabetes, hypertension and even cancer. As per Dr Dixit, eating two meals a day and restricting yourself from eating anything in between the two meals not only leads to weight loss but also controlling diabetes as well. Keto diet is another easy way of controlling your insulin.

Inspite of the fact that there is no definite proof of the same, this diet plan has worked for many people across Maharashtra and many people have tried this plan out.

Junk Food Consumption Can Lead To Depression – A Study

A study that involved an analysis of 11 existing studies targeting the link between junk foods and depression had a data of over 100,00 participants between the age group of 16 -72 years. It was published in the journal Clinical Nutrition and was same irrespective of age gender. It was same even across short as well as long follow periods. The participants belonged to different genders as well as ethnicity across countries like USA, Europe, Australia and Middle East. During the study every participant was given a score depending upon the level of inflammatory diet. Some of the studies made use of the data that was available on an immediate basis tracking participants 13 years down the line.

Junk Food Consumption Can Lead To Depression

The study revealed that the participants who were consuming a pro-inflammatory diet were on an average 1.4 times more likely to have depressive symptoms of depression. Even the researchers at the Manchester Metropolitan University of UK found out that inflammatory foods like foods high on cholesterol, carbohydrates and saturated fats puts people to 40% higher risk of developing depression.

The studies that were conducted, all of them did record the depressive symptoms of depression based on medical diagnosis, anti-depressant use as well as self-observation.

As per Steven Bradbum from the Manchester Metropoliton University the results had a high potential in for depression treatment and even of treatment for conditions like alzheimer’s due to the inflammatory component it has. As per him, the best possible solution to the same is making adequate dietary changes rather than going for expensive medications which come with side effects as well.

As per the researchers a diet that is balanced in nature and contains vitamins A, vitamin C, vitamin D, along with fibre and unsaturated fats is good for treating depression as it has an opposite effect. The best diet could be the Mediterranean diet because it contains olive oil, green vegetables, tomatoes as well as fatty fish.

The inflammation or redness and swelling is apparently a natural defense system of our body and its way to fight against injuries infections as well as toxins. But, yes inflammation that is chronic in nature can ring an alarm because it has been linked to life threatening conditions like heart disease, cancer and asthma earlier. It is also known that recurring inflammation or inflammation that is consistent in nature can lead to neuronal death.

Some Amazing Scientific Inventions That Changed the World For Good

The medical field has evolved consistently over a period of time ever since the inception of human kind. It has definitely brought about a progressive change in healthcare. But, some of these inventions have apparently brought about a kind of revolution in the field. Here is a list of few amazing inventions that have helped mankind to core ever since they’ve been invented.

Scientific Inventions That Changed the World For Good

X-ray – Imagine treating fractures and cracks in the bones without knowing anything about it. Though an accidental inventions it has worked wonders since its invention by German Physicist Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen way back in 1895. He was actually working on electron beams when he accidentally discovered that he was able to see his bones outlines. The initial reaction of people and critics was not favourable but eventually it won him the nobelprize in the year 1901.

Spectacles – Though there is not much evidence about who was the inventor of reading glasses. It is known to have been invented centuries ago and become even more in demand in the 1800’s when a lot of books began to be printed.

MRI and CT Scan – Inspired by the discovery of X-ray researchers began to dig deep into the possibilities of body scanning machines. This ultimately led to the invention of C T scanner and eventually MRI machine. The CT Scanner came into existence in 1979 which earned the inventor Dr Godfrey Hounsfield a Noble Prize and scanned multiple layers within multiple X-ray images. Soon, another invention called the MRI earned a lot of appraise to the inventor Dr Raymond V Damadian with its ability to differentiate normal cells with cancerous ones.

Cardiac Pacemaker – It was invented in the year 1926 by two genius scientists of Australian origin Edgar Booth and Mar Hill. The design was extremely complicated and required a needle to be pierced in the patients heart chamber but none the less it miraculously brought back a still born baby. Present day, the pacemakers are much more advanced and come with a battery life of 20 years.

Prosthetic’s/ Implants – Ask anyone with a handicap, how life can be challenging every single moment and then about prosthetic’s or implants and you’ll see how it has helped them overcome these challenges to a great extent. It is undoubtedly a big breakthrough of science and has enabled many lives shun their crutches or wheelchairs and live an independent life. The first prosthetic was an artificial limb invented by Douglas Bly in 1858.

Well, these are just a few of the inventions that enormously helped the medical fraternity and human kind overcome their healthcare challenges and are still doing so.

A world class integrated healthcare system, with a focus on compassionate supercare.

All About Human Senses – Five Plus

We all are taught in early school days only about the five human senses. The brain is apparently the decision maker and these sensory organs only help send the information to the brain and help the brain. But, what some of us might not know is there are people with more than five senses in addition to the existing ones. Before we talk about them let us talk about the basic five.

All About Human Senses - Five Plus

Sight – View is not as simple as ti seems. It is a complex procedure involving the transparent outer layer or the eye called cornea, the pupil and the iris. When the light reflects from the object you view to the eye the cornea bend the light as it passes through the pupil hole. The iris is like the camera shutter for eyes which opens to let the light in or retracts to let it out.

Smell – As per researchers humans are able to smell over 1 trillion scents. The nerve endings in olfactory cleft are responsible for transmitting smell to the brain. The oltefactory is located beside the smelling part of the brain on the roof of the nasal cavity. While human are equipped with 400 different smelling recepters, if there are issues in recognizing smells then it could be result of a rare disorder of effect of aging.

Hearing – Hearing is also a complex sensory organ that uses a complex labyrinth called human ear through which it funnels the sound from its external part into the external auditory canal. The sound apparently travels through eardrum or tympanic membrane, a thin connective tissue sheet that vibrates when sound waves strike. It then reaches the auditory ossicles in the middle year. These three little bones are known as malleus (hammer), stapes (stirrup) and incus(anvil) vibrate. The vibrates are send to the corti by the stapes bone by pushing the oval window structure in and out.

Taste – Taste is further divided into three different perceptions called sweet salty bitter and sour. Though scientists and researchers believe that the fifth one is savory or umami, they also say that there are many more that are yet to be discovered. As per the National Library of Medicine, spicy cannot be considered a taste but it is apparently a sign of pain. As humans we have 2000 to 4000 taste buds on the tongue, throat back, nasal cavity, esophagus and epiglottis. But, again smell does help the brain perceive the taste and hence, people with stuffy nose have difficulty recognizing taste properly.

Touch – As per researchers touch is said to be the first sense that humans develop. Specialized neurons in the skin communicate the distinct sensation to the brain. A touch sense includes sensations like touch, vibration, temperature, pain, pressure and more. It is said to be very important to human beings wellness beyond its use for interaction and does influence decision making to a good extent as well.

Now, about the additional senses. We do have some more subtle one that we never perceive. These include neuron sensors that control head tilt and balance besides kinesthetic receptors that are responsible for muscle and tendons stretching detection. Our body also has receptors that detect particular arteries of the bloodstream as well.
