All You Need to Know About the Cancer Hrithik Roshan is Suffering From

Recently, the celebrated Film Director Rakesh Roshan was diagnosed with early stage throat cancer. The news was shared on the social media by his son, film star Hrithik Roshan. For the past two years many movie celebrities shared their experiences around having cancer and the how life changed for them after getting to know about the cancerous conditions they had. This included notable actors like Irfan Khan, Nafisa Ali, Sonali Bendre, to name a few. While for Rakesh Roshan it is good news in a way because his cancer got detected early on, helping him and the doctors to provide treatment and help get rid of eat at the initial stage.

Rakesh Roshan is suffering from early stage squamous cell carcinoma of the throat and had to undergo surgery as well. Throat cancer is not a new in India, and occurs due to growth of abnormal cells around the throat lining in an uncontrolled manner. The cancer is quite common in Indians and occurs mostly in age groups of 50 and above. It is a considered under the category of cancers for head and neck. In oncology throat and neck cancers come under one category because of they have similarities in their type, pathological features, predisposing factors, cancer types and more.

Throat cancer includes cancers around the vocal cord, tonsil, voice box and orpharynx. There are two categories of throat cancers namely pharyngeal and laryngeal cancer. The two primary types include the Squamous cell carcinoma and Adenocarcinoma.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma – Known to be one of the most common forms of throat cancer, this affects the throats flat cell lining.

Adenocarcinoma – This cancer is not as common as the first one and affects the glandular cells.

Symptoms
Early detection of cancer is not easy but if it is, consider it as a boon. It helps to give appropriate treatment and curb it and eliminate it as well. Symptoms include weight loss, trouble with swallowing, change in voice, swollen lymph nodes, ear pain, wheezing and persistent cough to name a few.

Risk Factors
Men are known to be at a higher risk than women when it comes to getting throat cancer. Even life style that includes addictions like excess alcohol, smoking, genetics, poor dental hygiene and nutrition as well as asbestos exposure increases the chances of getting throat cancer.

Treatment
The treatment depends on the diagnosis and could include surgery and or radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

  • Surgery – Depending on the size of the tumor, the surgery could be an endoscopic one or it could be cordectomy wherein a part or complete vocal chord is removed. When a part of your chord is removed it is known as laryngectomy, while when a part of your throat is removed it is known as Pharyngectomy. If the cancer is spread across the neck then it is known as dissection.
  • Radiation Therapy : There are two types of radiation therapies namely
  1. Intensity modulated radiotherapy / 3D conformal radiation therapy – These treatments customize the radiations as per the tumor shape and is a common technique used in cancers like the hypopharyngeal and laryngeal cancer.
  2. Brachytherapy – This is not a common type of radiation therapy and includes placing a radioactive seeds within the tumor.
  • Chemotherapy – Chemotherapy is one of the common treatments given to cancer patients either with or without radiation therapy. This is given when the tumor has spread through the lymph nodes to other parts or tissues.

Treatment of this cancer can cause side effects like difficulty with breathing, swallowing food, disfigurement of face or neck, difficulty with speaking and hardening around the neck to name a few. With the help of occupational therapists you can learn to deal with such issues.

Early detection of throat cancer means high survival rate. While if detected later, the speed could be slowed down thus prolonging life span through treatment.

Cancer Vaccine that can Cure 97% of Tumor from Mice Approved for Human Trial

Yes, you read that right. As per researchers of Stanford University, a vaccine they tested on mice has worked well in curing around 97% of the tumors in mice and is ready for human trial. According to SFGate. the human trial is scheduled to be conducted on 35 people suffering from lymphoma before the year ends.

The study was earlier tested on mice with cancers ranging from colon, breast and lymphoma. The results were welcoming, because this treatment cured around 87 mice out of the 90. The best part is that tumors in some mice had spread through other parts of the body too and even then they could be cured.

Cancer Vaccine That can Cure 97% of Tumor from Mice Approved for Human trial

As per the regional director of breast surgery at North-well Health Cancer Institute in Westchester, New York, even if the news was exciting enough, the results on animals might not be the same as that on humans. So, there is still a long way to go before the treatment works for particularly cancers other than lymphoma, viz. breast and colon.

Though it is called a vaccine, technically it ain’t. It is more of an immunotherapy. It is still given the name of a vaccine for a reason that is does contain a vaccine like injection. Also, as per the American society of clinical oncology, cancer vaccines can be used for referring treatment of cancer and preventing it from coming back. This vaccine involves the injection of the vaccine into the existing tumor. It does the role of reactivating the T cells. These T cells are responsible for infiltrating and attacking the cancer cells. But, as the tumor increases, the cancer tells suppress these T cells.
Immunotherapy is not something new though. It has been in practice for quite some time. A treatment called CAR t-cell therapy has been already approved some time back for leukemia as well as lymphoma. This therapy is about removing certain immune cells from the body and genetically engineer these cells so that they become capable of fighting cancer.

But, the advantage of this therapy over CAR T-cell therapy is that nothing from the body is to be removed or customized. Here it’s just targeted therapy where the doctors will be concentrating and attacking specific targets.

Though this study is one step forward in the direction to treat cancer but still it’s a long way to go.

Oral Cancer – Types – Risk Factors – Symptoms – Diagnosis – Stages – Treatment

The cancer that develops in the tissue of mouth or throat is known as oral cancer and belongs to head and neck cancer group. The cancer usually occurs in people over the age group of 40 and there are thousands of people suffering from oral cancer every year. The survival and treatment is based on the diagnosis and the stage of detection.

Oral Cancer types
1. Tongue Cancer
2. Lips Cancer
3. Gums Cancer
4. The floor of the mouth
5. The inner lining of the cheek
6. Hard and Soft palate

Risk Factors
Oral cancer is most common in people chewing tobacco in different forms like pipes, a cigar as well as in people who consume alcohol. Male are twice at risk of oral cancer compared to women. Besides, the following risk factors can cause cancers as well.
• The family history of oral or any other cancer
• Poor Nutrition
• Weak immune system
• Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection
• Chronic facial sun exposure

Oral Cancer

Symptoms
• A lump growth anywhere inside the mouth
• Bleeding from the mouth
• Trouble swallowing or wearing dentures
• Loose teeth
• A lip or mouth sore that does not heal
• A sore throat
• Red or white patches on lips or inside the mouth
• Jaw or tongue pain or stiffness

Diagnosis
The diagnosis can be done using either X-ray, CT Scan or an MRI scan. MRI’s can show highly accurate results on cancer of neck and head with the stage of it while PET scan can be done in order to check whether the cancer is reached to the other organs or lymph nodes. X-ray can help determine whether cancer has spread to chest, lungs or jaw. CT scan is also used to diagnose cancers in organs like lungs, neck, mouth, and throat.

Stages
There are four stages through which cancer progresses and the survival rate also varies based on the stage of detection of the cancer
Stage 1 – The tumor at this stage is around 2 cm or even smaller and the cancer is not yet spread to the lymph nodes. Survival rate at this stage is quite high
Stage 2 – The tumor is over 2 cm but under 4 cm in size and cancer hasn’t spread to the nodes. The survival rate is good if the cancer is detected at this stage
Stage 3 – This is a bit advanced stage where the tumor is over 4 cm and it hasn’t spread to the lymph node or is of any size and has spread to one of the lymph nodes. The survival rate is reduced at this stage
Stage 4 – This is the final stage and cancer has a tumor of any size that has spread to other lymph nodes as well as other parts of the body.

The survival rate for over 60% of people with oral cancer is said to be up to five years or more. The earlier the diagnosis happens, the more is the rate of survival and hence it is the most for localized cancer (83%), 64% for cancer that has spread to lymph nodes and 38% for last stage cancer.

Treatment
The treatment of oral cancer depends on the diagnosis and the type, location, and stage of cancer.
The treatment includes –
Surgery – The initial treatment involves removal of the cancerous tumor and lymph nodes. If required some other tissues might be removed from the neck and mouth.
Chemotherapy – This therapy involves removal of the cancerous cells using drugs. The therapy is carried out on an outpatient basis, wherein the medicine is provided orally or via (IV).
Radiation Therapy – The therapy is a process of two to eight weeks wherein the doctor projects radiation beams at the tumor once or twice a day. For advanced stage cancers, a mix of chemotherapy and radiation therapy is carried out.
Targeted Therapy – Targeted therapy is another form of therapy which works well will containing the growth of cancer cells. The drug binds with specific proteins on cancer cells in order to interfere with their growth.

Cancer treatment can take a toll on your diet making it difficult to eat and swallow. Hence, it is important that you discuss your nutrition with the doctor which provides you with all the need nutrients and is even painless for you to an extent.

A Technique To Destroy Cancer Cells Within Three Days

A new study has further raised the hope for treating cancer faster due to the easy technique which alters the structure of chromatin in cancer cells thus destroying them faster and in an easier way.

Now chromatin is formed from DNA that are wrapped around proteins and called Histones. Chromatin is responsible for regulating the genes that are switched on and off besides packaging the genetic code into the cell nucleus properly. In technical language you may put chromatin as the software if the genetics is termed as hardware.

A Technique To Destroy Cancer Cells Within Three Days

Though chromatin works for cancer cells in a way because it aids in their evolution and helps them adapt to cancer therapies, ultimately helping them survive and grow.
Cancer being a complex condition, individual behavior of genes does not make a difference but it all actually depends on the complex interplay of the thousands of genes. Hence, the researchers focused on chromatin for fighting cancer.

They developed the technique called Partial Wave Spectroscopic (PWS) microscopy, which allows real time monitoring of chromatin in living cells. They used this technique in cultured cancer cell and found that chromatin helps cancer cells evade treatment due to the specific packaging density linked with gene expression.

The more disordered and heterogenous the chromatin packaging density, the more ordered and conservative it is, the more are the chances of cancer cell death while responding to chemotherapy. Thus as per the discovery made, the researchers came to hypothesis that changing the chromatin structure and making it orderly can actually help in increasing cancer cells treatment vulnerability. Further study made them understand the fact that it was possible to modify the chromatin structure in the nucleus of the cancer cells by electrolytes.

The researchers tried combining two drugs one Celecoxib used for pain relief and Digoxin used for treating fibrillation as well as heart failure. Referring this combination as chromatin protection therapeutics (CPTs), they tested it on cancer cells in the lab with chemotherapy and the results according to the researchers were remarkable.

The researchers have also successfully replicated the finding in seven different cancer kinds which is a ray of hope in the cancer treatment.
