Blue Light from Digital Devices and Mobile Phones can Speed up Night Blindness

A study has found that the blue light emitted from mobile phones as well as other mobile devices can accelerate night blindness. The study was carried out by the University of Toledo, USA and the researchers explained that the blue light that was emitted from these devices lead to macular degeneration as there was a possibility of it causing poisonous molecules to be generated in the light sensitive cells of the eye.

Blue Light from Digital Devices and Mobile Phone

Although we know that the blue light from the mobile phones does harm our eyes but not about how all this happens. As per the assistant Professor of the department of Chemistry and biochemistry of the University, the idea of the experiment is to explain how the acceleration of blindness occurs so that therapies for slowing down macular degeneration can be discovered and implemented. One such example of the same is ‘new kind of eye drop’.

What is Macular Degeneration?
One of the major causes of blindness, macular degeneration has affected millions of lives and is caused due to the deterioration of macula also known as retinas central position. The macula is the most sensitive area of an eye and is responsible for controlling our eye abilities like driving, reading, identifying colors, people and object details. Macular degeneration is of two types dry (atrophic) and wet (exudative). Over 90% of the cases of vision loss are due to dry type and only around 10-15% are that of wet type.

Age related Macular Degeneration (AMD) has three stages -

  • Early AMD – Recognized by yellow deposits under the retina early AMD does not have major symptoms as there is no loss of vision. Hence, it is a good idea to examine your eyes on a regular basis.
  • Intermediate AMD – Some vision loss is there but still not noticeable enough. An eye test can help determine the pigment changes in the retina.
  • Late AMD – This is the stage when vision loss becomes noticeable.

Macular degeneration occurs when photoreceptor viz. the light sensitive cells die away. The cells also called the photoreceptor cells, sense light and send signals to the brain further making it possible for us to see, all this with the help of molecules known as retinal.
The retinal kills the photoreceptor when the blue light falls on it because the molecule that sends the signal dissolves. Furthermore, there is no regeneration that occurs once the cells die. Photoreceptor cells once dead are dead forever.

As per the researchers, Blue light is best avoided by restricting the use of mobiles and tablets in the dark. Besides, you can also use sun glasses to protect your eyes as they have the ability to filter the blue light as well as the UV rays.

The Department of Ophthalmology have a comprehensive program of patient care that exposes patients to the latest therapies in eye care, a cutting-edge team of examiners who carry out both clinical trials and laboratory research.

Can Traditional South Indian Medicine be the Answer to Dengue and Chickengunya Treatment

Now, that is interesting and before you think of this news as just another rumor around Dengue and Chikungunya treatment, know that scientists have already carried out the study at New Delhi’s International Centre for Genetic Engineering (ICGEB) on mice. The good news it, the medicine was effective on mice in the laboratory study.

We all know that Chikungunya and Dengue have been creating a havoc in terms of making people sick, causing bone ache and deaths citing unavailability of definite treatment. The statistics show that over 1.5 lac patients were affected by dengue of which 250 succumbed to the illness while over 60K were diagnosed with chikungunya. Hence, this news can be a positive step in using traditional medicine system in India.

Nilavembu Kudineer

The common people living in Tamilnadu and Kerala have tried the formulation of this medicine and it has seemed effective on them. Even the government of Tamilnadu and Kerala have given their nod or approval for using it when there is an outbreak of dengue or chikungunya. But, as per the lead author of these scientific papers, there is no full proof evidence as questions on whether the medicines work and if yes, how, remain unanswered till date.

The said medicine called Amukkara Churanam consisted of Ashwagandha as its main ingredient. This ingredient did work well in preventing the chikungunya virus from entering the blood barrier and affecting the joints. Its test on mice also showed that the virus was not able to cross the blood barrier and affect the joints.

Chikungunya is also known to cause brain inflammation or altered mental functions. This Siddha medicine worked well in preventing these neurological symptoms that has been cited as a major cause of patients being admitted to the ICU as well as deaths. It also works in avoiding the post disease arthritis issues.

The scientist have studied the second medicine known as Nilavembu Kudineer in vivo already but are in the process to try it on mice. It has also shown the ability to stop the dengue virus from multiplying and restricting the chikungunya virus entry. The main ingredient of this formulation is Andrographics. It does the work of binding the receptors that the virus bind with. As per Dr Sunil, group lead at ICGEB, this ingredient can be put to use as prophylactic treatment for prevention of chikungunya and dengue.

The lab testing for dengue virus on mice is yet to be done while both these studies have found a place in the Journal of Evidence Based Alternative Medicine besides Journal of Viral Diseases that are funded by the ministry of AYUSH for Research in Siddha.

How Trojan Horse Treatment is the new Hope in Fighting Brain Tumor?

One of the common, as well as highly aggressive tumors of the brain, is the Glioblastoma multiforme. Once, the diagnosis is done, many patients die within a few months period itself. The survival rate for this tumor is as low as 6 patients out of 100 being able to live for 5 years period or more. This is one cancer that has shown a lot of resistance against treatments. One of the main reason behind the same is because this tumor invades the healthy brain tissues surrounding it, thus making impossible to remove it surgically.

The research was carried out by engineering nanostructures containing both conventional chemotherapy drugs namely cisplatin and gold. These nanospheres were released to the tumor cells were taken from patients suffering from glioblastoma, taken to the laboratory and grown followed by exposure to radiotherapy. The results were quite amazing and after 20 days, the tumor cells were totally destroyed without any proof of revival. The treatment was more effective than conventional chemotherapy because it enhanced the impact of it by helping gold to release electrons that caused damage to the DNA of the cancer cells and the overall structure as well.

Brain Tumor

This is a stepping stone in the treatment of aggressive brain tumor and as per the experts in Nanotechnology but work is still in progress before this treatment can be used for patients suffering with glioblastoma. The best part of the experiment was that it was carried out on tumors of glioblastoma patients, where the experts tested this approach drug resistant tumors that were evolving.

The study was carried out by Dr Colin Watts, a clinical scientist as well as honorary consultant Neurosurgeon at the Clinical Neurosciences and Mark Wellan, Professor of Nanotechnology and Fellow at St John’s College, University of Cambridge. This work of theirs is published in the Royal Society of Chemistry Journal call Nanoscale.

As per Professor Welland, their combined therapy seems to be highly effective particularly with live cell culture. This is definitely not the cure for cancer but throws light how nanotechnology can play a significant role fighting this aggressive cancer. Researchers also believe that this treatment procedure could be used for treating a variety of different and challenging cancer types.

The professor also harped upon the big advantage the nano scientists had by working with clinicians because they could ensure that this science does have a clinical relevance through their involvement. This further ensures that the idea can be realized and implemented beyond the labs due to its clinical impact.

Do you Brush this Part of Your Teeth?

Well, we all brush our teeth on a daily basis but there is a proper way of brushing your teeth and most of us, as per dentists miss out on important areas of the teeth while brushing. So which are the areas that people do not concentrate on while brushing? As per dental experts, most people concentrate on front side of the teeth because in the mirror only that part is visible. But, the inside of the teeth, the part that faces the tongue is also equally or rather even more important because the plaque tends to deposit on this part.

Dental experts pointed out many issues that people do not address when they brush their teeth. Here is a run-down some of the important ones.

Do you Brush this Part of Your Teeth

Pressure Application – As per dentists too much pressure or too little pressure, both ways is not a good idea. Too much pressure can damage your teeth while too little pressure can leave the plaque on the teeth. The pressure needs to be right enough for you to feel comfortable, remove the plaque and food particles from the mouth and not damage the bristles of the brush.

Cleaning Time – As per dentists you need to brush your teeth atleast for two minutes every day. You may divide these two minutes into 30 seconds slots, wherein 30 seconds you may use for top surface of the teeth, 30 seconds for bottom surface, and 30 seconds each for inside of the top and bottom surface.

Tooth Brush – Selecting a good toothbrush helps in keeping your teeth clean and healthy. Tooth brushes with hard bristles can cause damage to your teeth. Hence, while choosing a brush go for one with soft bristles. You may either go for a manual brush or an automatic one, but ensure that the bristles are soft.

Tooth Paste – A fluoride based toothpaste works well because it helps in preventing tooth decay.

Flossing – Flossing your teeth on a daily basis is very important as per dentists. It helps in avoiding the deposition of plaque on your teeth and even fighting bad breath issues.
Tongue Cleaning – Cleaning your tongue on a daily basis using a pointy brush or interdental cleaner helps keep the damage and bad breath causing bacteria at bay.

Well, brushing teeth is a daily routine that we all follow, but care needs to be taken to brush properly so that it works in your favor and not against your teeth or mouth. Do not ignore the vital parts around the teeth and try brushing twice a day if not thrice to maintain your oral health properly.

Some Signs that could Hint an underlying life Threatening Condition

In these times when work, career and Ka- ching has taken a priority and health has taken a back seat for most of us we tend to ignore health bigtime.  There are some signals that our body gives us to let us know that something is seriously wrong somewhere inside and needs a check. Many a times with the busy schedules we have, we tend to ignore these symptoms and end up paying a hefty price later on. To save nine, you have to have a stitch in time. So, do not ignore symptoms those you feel are something you’ve never experienced before or symptoms that keep coming back. The famous actress Sonali Bendre was recently diagnosed with metastatic cancer and she herself accepted that she did not take the recurring niggling pain seriously and avoided going for screening. By the time she went for a check, the diagnosis revealed cancer of the metastatic stage.

Consistent Fatigue – Fatigue does occur when you are tired but if you experience fatigue on a regular basis, a good idea is to check it up with your physician.

Severe Headache – You may get head-aches at times and that does not mean it is anything serious but if you get a sudden headache out of the blue and it is severe, it may mean that some blood vessel is burst in the brain and could be life-threatening.

One Eye Blindness – This is a symptom of stroke and needs immediate action. It occurs when the oxygen supply to the brain is disrupted and affects only one side of the body and not both.

Shortness of Breath – This occurs when there is a panic attack or anxiety attack. It could clot a lung artery or cause any other cardiovascular issues.

Unexplained Weight Loss – This symptom could mean an overactive thyroid gland, liver disease or even cancer.

Persistent Cough – A persistent cough could mean pneumonia and coughing blood could signal an infection. It might not necessarily mean lung cancer always.

Vomiting – If you vomit regularly after eating, it can be an indication of stomach cancer. The other reason for persistent vomiting could be food poisoning or gall bladder disease.

If you are experiencing one or more of the above-said symptoms, then it is high time that you pay some serious heed to it and go and meet up a physician. It might be nothing life-threatening but to be sure from your side.

Five Common Dental Procedures for Children

Dental problems in children are quite common and there are various different pediatric dental procedures available to deal with these dental problems. Dental issues are very painful and for kids its gets a little too much of an experience. Here’s a list of five common dental procedures for children experiencing dental problems.

Five Common Dental Procedures for Children

Dental Cleaning – Before going ahead with the dental cleaning of a child the dentist does review the medical history. Then the doctor examines the mouth region to check for oral health issues. The dental cleaning treatment involves removal of hard tartar deposits called calculus and plaque. Post cleaning fluoride is applied to the teeth to strengthen them against decay.

Pulp Treatment – Pulp treatment is necessary if there is some sort of injury or there is extensive tooth decay. If this treatment is not carried out it can cause discomfort to the kid due to pain, swelling, infection and even loss of teeth.

Stainless Steel Crowns – When there is extensive decay and cannot hold white fillings, stainless steel crowns are put into use. These crowns are fit and cemented in the primary teeth of the baby so as to prevent any further damage until these teeth are naturally lost.

Tooth Colored Fillings – When the appearance is a problem due to tooth decay or fracture in teeth, tooth-colored fillings come into use. They help restore the front and back of the teeth thus improving the cosmetic appearance. The color of the filling is kept as near to the natural color of teeth as possible.

Space Maintenance – When a child loses the primary teeth one or more prematurely, space maintainers are used. Using space maintainers becomes important because if they are not used then-new permanent teeth might not erupt in the correct position. The space maintainer is kept in the mouth till the permanent teeth replace the void area created by the extracted teeth.

Besides, dental procedures also make use of sealants, fluoride as well a dental care for prevention and protection of teeth against decay and other issues. If your child is experiencing dental issues like cavities or decay of a tooth, make an appointment with the dentist and take advice on the further action plan. Well, ignoring dental issues of kids thinking that only permanent teeth are important is a wrong notion, so stay aware of the dental issues in your infant or toddlers.
